Batgirl #1 Review

It's been a couple of years since Batgirl had her own series. Now Batgirl finally comes out of retirement in a new ongoing series. Unfortunately this is not the Batgirl that we have come to know and love. This is a new Batgirl and her name is Stephanie Brown. Those who don't know who she is here's the cliffnotes version. She was the vigilante "Spoiler," who had a romantic relationship with Tim Drake (a.k.a. Robin III).
In this series Stephanie takes on the mantle of Batgirl after the previous Batgirl (Cassandra) retires claiming that it just isn't the same without Bruce Wayne as Batman. So, Stephanie becomes Batgirl and continues to fight the criminals of Gotham.
Now, I know your probably thinking "simple storyline," right. Wrong. This comic shows stephanie starting her freshman year in Gotham University, dealing with her double identity, and having to cope with lying to her mother claiming that she was thru w/ her double identity. In the comic she claims that she was going to "go out," one more night however, she still can't escape the thrawl of the bat.
Another character that makes an appearance in this comic is Barbra Gordon (a.k.a. the 1st Batgirl) she appears lost since she disbanded her team "The Birds of Prey," and she doesen't know where she fits in anymore. This comic ends with her going to see Stephanie Brown.
In my opinion this is just the icing on this huge delicious "new age" Batman cake. I personally like the story line of this new Batgirl. I personally love comics that show the problems that occur with every day people. I think many female readers will love this particular Batgirl. To me it seems like one they can relate to.
My only problem with this story is why Cassandra had to retire. They never really explain why (this would make a great storyline in a future series). Overall this was an exciting read and I can't wait to read the next issue.
