Remembering Lionel Luthor

Last Night on "Smallville" fans said goodbye to Lionel Luthor(John Glover). As a fan of "Smallville" when I first saw Lionel in the first episode I had no idea just what a major character he would play in the series. He first started out as just being Lex Luthor's father however, as the series progressed we got to know a lot more about him. We saw that he was a real SOB who helped Johnathan and Martha Kent adopt Clark, He also tried to discover Clark's secret and tried to erase Lex's memories. Thank goodness Chloe and Lex found the evidence that proved that Lionel had murdered his parents, and sent him to prison.
As the series continued Jor-El(Clark's Biological Father) inhabited the body of Lionel Luthor. By doing this Lionel had become a vessel of Kryptonian knowledge. After Johnathan Kent died we got to see that Lionel had grown into a person. He kept Clark's Secret and continued to be a "father figure" for Clark in Johnathan's absence. It wasn't until this season that things really started to unfold. We learned that Lionel was a part of this "secret organization" (Veritas) that worshiped the "Traveler" (Clark Kent) who was comming to Earth. When he tried to protect Clark it backfired and Clark suddenly felt nothing but distrust to Lionel. He died protecting Clark's Secret after being pushed outside a window by his son Lex Luthor.
John Glover, really nailed this role and fans really got to love and hate Lionel because of his great acting. To me the show will not be the same without Lionel, because he was the only person who really understood Clark and the only person who would die to keep Clark's secret. I truly believed that Lionel was a person that was truly given a second chance and proved it by making the ultimate sacrifice.
